Seniors Golf at Carlisle Golf Club

The Red Squirrels

The Red Squirrels is Carlisle Golf Club’s senior section, open to all members aged 55 and over. The section offers a friendly and inclusive environment where members can enjoy regular golf in a relaxed but competitive setting, while remaining actively involved in club life.

Membership of the Red Squirrels is £5 per year, payable each October.

About the Red Squirrels

The aim of the Red Squirrels is to provide a balanced programme of social and competitive golf throughout the year. Members can enjoy weekly competitions, major trophy events, Over-55s competitions and a full programme of inter-club matches.

Weekly Competitions

Weekly Stableford competitions are played throughout the year. In winter, they take place every Wednesday, while in summer they are played on Wednesdays when no Over-55s competition is scheduled.

Two draws are made each week, with the first at 9:50am for a 10:00am tee time, followed by a second draw at 10:20am. The entry fee is £2, with four main prizes awarded along with prizes for 2s.

Over-55s Competitions

Over-55s competitions are organised by the Club and entered via ClubV1, providing additional competitive opportunities for senior members during the season.

Inter-Club Matches

The Red Squirrels play home and away fixtures against a number of neighbouring clubs, including Silloth, Lochmaben, Southerness, Powfoot, Hexham, Penrith, Brampton and Workington.

Teams consist of 16 players, with availability sheets displayed on the noticeboard. Teams are selected by the Red Squirrels Committee, with selected players notified by email and team details published on the noticeboard and website. A Captain and Vice-Captain are appointed for each fixture.

Major Trophies & Events

Major competitions include the Armstrong Watson Trophy, Mason Trophy, Graham & Bowness Trophy, Anderson Trophy and the Alan Causer Plate. These events are played on designated Squirrel Wednesdays, off club handicaps and divided into age categories to ensure balanced numbers.

Prizes are awarded to the first three overall finishers and one winner in each age category, with an entry fee of £5.

The Eddie Boyle Trophy is played over six weeks during November and December, with the best three cards counting towards the final result. The Terris Trophy is awarded annually to the member recording the most 2s.

Handicap Adjustments

At the start of October, members revert to their club handicaps. In weekly Stablefords, players scoring over 36 points will have their handicap reduced by one stroke per point over 36, up to a maximum of four strokes. This applies to the top four finishers only, with players reverting to their club handicaps after 2 qualifying rounds.

In April, all members revert to their club handicaps and the process restarts for the summer season.
